Tips

• Medicare part B enrollment starts 3 months before you turn 65 till 3 months after. Penalty goes up 10% each full year if you signed up late.
• Medigap, Medicare supplement, enrollment period starts when you join part B and last for 6 months. Insurers are required to sell you the Medigap when you turn 65 regardless of your health condition. But that is not the case when you apply it after age 65, insurance company may refuse to cover you.
• Medicare premiums are set according to your tax return 2 years ago. If you experience a big drop in income lately, contact your local Social Security office to recalculate your premiums.
